Founder's Note:
I believe that in life change starts with our own two hands. Change isn't going to fall from the sky or just happen because we have thoughts that it should. Actions make a difference. But this much, much, much easier said than done.
Pain creates a will to make change. Witnessing adversity is a catalyst. But wishful thinking alone will do nothing at all. In 2017 when I was 22 I started a charity (which operates to this day) with supercar events (a police escort of Ferraris/Lamborghinis etc). I used to go up to Ferrari owners on the street to convince them, now it’s part of our brand identity. At 22 convinced them I still don’t know how. I worked at KFC as an honours student to start Bread just to get quick cash to start it. I’ve never had a handout, I’ve always structured the charity like a business as we have to compete to survive, if we were given handouts we would be complacent. One can never innovate with complacency. 100% of the proceeds are donated.
Growing up a Subaru WRX with a 15" subwoofer was our dream car so this was a new world. I needed to set this up to make change and fund what would eventually become Bread. I've created musical studios for kids between Auckland and Los Angeles and pre-covid we used to mentor kids in low decile schools with medical student volunteers. Working with police to help youth is also a big thing we focus on.
I grew up in a small city attending pretty low decile schools, so tech wasn't something I even knew about. Wavie was started without knowing there was such a thing as a tech industry. It was simply a will to change aspects about the world which needed attention. From that to now be collaborating with the likes of Google is something special and we're super grateful for everything. Speaking on the phone with Google Cloud's CEO about how Wavie should scale. The support has been amazing.
I think it's perhaps first hand experience that life is very fragile that keeps us pushing to innovate and do things which can hopefully one day change the world. I can name a few times in which I look back and I'm just grateful i'm here. Each moment is a blessing and tomorrow is never promised. So every second of the day is spent trying to do good in this world. Every second a kid we could have helped is suffering, every second that passes we could have helped a student. We're all living on borrowed time so every step is in appreciation for time given and in return trying to some good in the world.
Transparency about why we do what we do and the story behind it is something we try to do at every opportunity. Not only to show an insight into underlying values which I do think a lot of companies lack, existing just to fill investor pockets. But also in hope that someone can see how we did things and they can also realise the power for change each of us has.
So what is Wavie? It's a mixture of pain, determination and pure will to change the world. It's not a place where people in suits talk about profits and how we can cut costs. If you haven't already, take a look at Wavie Village which is in development. A system that connects kids in need to Harvard students using Wavie technology. I never really saw university students growing up because we were so isolated, but this system can change what was previously ignored and/or not possible. That's Wavie. Thinking big to change the world so that one day there is a real difference.
